Description

Whitecleave is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a private dwelling. It dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, although there may be earlier fabric hidden within the structure. The building was extended on the left end in the 19th century. It features painted rendered stone rubble and cob, with a brick stack at the left end and an axial brick stack.

Originally, the house likely followed a 3-room and cross-passage plan, with the higher end to the left and an axial hall stack backing onto the passage. However, there is no remaining evidence of a lower end. The original cross-passage doorway has been blocked, resulting in a narrow room at the right end and a direct entry into the hall. In the 19th century, the inner room was extended at the left end. A probably 19th-century staircase runs up the rear wall of the inner room, entering the hall at the rear left-hand corner.

The building has two storeys and a four-window range, featuring 2-light casements with two panes per light. The ground floor has early 20th-century 2-light casements with four panes per light. An inserted door leads into the hall and is topped by a thatched porch canopy.

Inside, there are no details earlier than the late 17th or early 18th century. The ceiling beams are rough and unchamfered, with those in the hall having rough hollow step stops. The roof structure consists of straight pegged principals with waney rafters.
