Description
BURRINGTON SS 61 NW 5/23 Whitecleave - - II Former farmhouse, now private dwelling. Late C17 or early C18, but possibly earlier fabric concealed. Extended at left end in C19. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Brick stack at left end and axial brick stack. Plan: Originally the house may have conformed to a 3-room and cross-passage plan, higher end to left, with axial hall stack backing onto passage. However, there is no surviving evidence of a lower end. The original cross-passage doorway has been blocked, creating a narrow room at the right end and direct entry made into the hall. In C19, the inner room was extended at the left end. Probably C19 staircase runs up rear wall of inner room, entering the hall at rear left-hand corner. 2 storeys. 4-window range. 2-light casements 2 panes per light. Ground floor has early C20 2-light casements 4 panes per light. Inserted door into hall has thatched porch canopy. Interior: No interior detail earlier than late C171early C18 in evidence. Rough unchamfered ceiling beams, those to hall with rough hollow step stops. Roof structure has straight pegged principals with waney rafters.
