Description
This is a large barn with an attached granary and horse-engine house, located about 10 metres southeast of Abbotts Marsh Farmhouse. The barn likely dates back to the late 17th century but was remodeled, reroofed, and enlarged in the 19th century when the granary wing and horse-engine house were added. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble and cob, featuring a bitumenised slate roof with hipped ends and a polygonal roof over the horse-engine house. The barn has an L-shaped plan, with the granary at the end of the shorter wing and the horse-engine house positioned unusually in the angle. There are four cart entrances at the front of the barn. On the left end, there is a single 4-light timber mullion window, with square-section mullions, one of which has been removed. The lintel and weathered sill of the window are chamfered. The horse-engine house is open-sided, supported by stone rubble piers. Inside the main barn, there are scissor-braced trusses, while the wing features king-post trusses. A horizontal winding beam remains in place in the horse-engine house.
