Description
Mole Cottage is likely from the mid-19th century, but was significantly remodelled and extended around 1920. It is constructed with a painted rendered right-hand side made of stone rubble and cob, and a left-hand side made of brick. The roof is thatched, with the thatch extending down over a lean-to porch at the left end. There is a brick stack to the rear towards the left end and another at the right end.
The cottage’s layout consists of two rooms to the left and a single room to the right of what was originally the entrance hall, which now contains the staircase. A front doorway has been blocked. A new entrance porch and staircase have been added to the left end. A flat-roofed extension has been added to the rear. It appears the original cottage comprised only of the right-hand room, and the entire structure was remodelled and extended in a picturesque style around 1920.
The cottage is two storeys high with a six-window front. The design is asymmetrical. All the windows are modern, with square leaded panes, but designed to appear as they would have from the 1920s. A large gabled dormer window is above the two right-hand windows, and a smaller half-dormer is towards the left end with a three-light window. A rustic timber porch with a blocked doorway projects slightly on the right-hand side. A lean-to rustic verandah and entrance porch are at the left end, with a full eyebrow dormer above.
Mole Cottage forms part of a roadside group with its stable, garage and store-shed.
