Description

This is an early 19th century shop with living accommodation above. The front walls are rendered and the rear walls are solid, with slate hanging on the exposed top gable. It has a tarred slated roof and a low parapet with coping, likely made of stone, on the left gable. A rendered base marks the former chimney at the apex.

The exterior is three storeys high with a garret, and features three windows across the front. The ground-floor shopfront dates to the late 19th century, with a wide entrance to a public passage on the left. This entrance is flanked and separated by panelled wooden pilasters topped with large brackets supporting small gabled blocks. The original entablature remains above the passage entrance, but has been replaced with a blind case over the shop itself. The shop has a pair of display windows with moulded shafts, which are splayed at the centre where they meet the shop door. A low, panelled wooden gate with decorated hinges and straps serves the passage entrance. Upper-storey windows are mostly 6-paned sashes, with the central window of each storey being blind. A moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the top. There are two dormers with cambered tops, featuring late 20th-century wooden windows.

The house door, opening from the passage, is 6-panelled with the top two panels glazed and a 2-paned fanlight above. The passage floor retains original flagstones and patterned yellow bricks. Rear windows in the upper storeys, visible from behind the building, have 2-paned sashes, with the middle window of the third storey being blind.

Inside, original features remain, including a dog-leg staircase with an open string, shaped ends, square balusters and a mahogany wreathed rail. The original doors and door frames are also present.
