Description
The terrace at 3-11 Taw Vale Parade is a group of originally ten houses, now largely used as offices and restaurants. It was likely built in the 1840s, coinciding with the development of Taw Vale. The buildings are constructed with smooth-plastered mass walls and have natural slate roofs, featuring stacks with rendered shafts and some original pots.
The central four houses are three-storey high, while the flanking houses are three-storey and have attics, with lower rooflines and basements. The terrace presents a symmetrical seven-bay, eight-bay, seven-bay facade. The central block has moulded eaves brackets and an eaves band, while the outer houses feature cornices below the parapets and mansard roofs. The ground floor exhibits channelled rustication with a moulded string at first-floor level. Round-headed doorways are found in the outer blocks, and the windows are mostly plate glass sashes. First-floor windows have moulded architraves; some retain what are probably original 12-pane sashes, while others have been reglazed with later timber sashes.
The central block has more elaborate detailing, including an anthemion balcony on iron brackets to the first floor and high-transomed French windows with cornices supported on consoles; the second floor windows are 12-pane sashes. A cast-iron balcony, likely dating to the 1860s, is present on the right-hand house of the right-hand block. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest. The terrace is an important feature within a group of 19th-century town houses on Taw Vale Parade.
