Description
Riverside is a house that likely dates from the 18th century or earlier, with a remodel that occurred around the early 19th century. The rear outshut was raised to two storeys in the mid-20th century, and there have been various interior alterations in the 20th century. The building features whitewashed plastered cob on stone rubble footings and has a tiled roof with gabled ends, which was thatched until at least 1960. It has end stacks with brick shafts, and the right end stack projects with a bread oven.
The house is situated end on to the road and is two rooms wide, with two principal rooms at the front and narrow service rooms at the rear. The entrance is located on the right gable end. The layout has been significantly altered in recent years; there was previously a central entrance leading into a passage, and it is presumed that the right-hand room served as a kitchen (indicated by the stack with the bread oven), while the left-hand room functioned as a parlour. It is unclear whether the rear outshut was originally part of the main structure or added later. The entrance passage no longer exists, and a second storey has been added to the outshut, which now includes the kitchen, with the two front rooms serving as the main living areas.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical three-bay front with 16-pane timber sashes from the early 19th century, except for the ground floor center, which has a re-used 12-pane sash from the early 19th century. There are also timber sashes and casements on the rear elevation. The interior has been modernized. Riverside is part of a group of buildings in Alswear village.
