Description

This structure consists of stables and a barn with an attached horse-engine house, located approximately 5 metres southeast of East Bradninch Farmhouse. The stables and barn date from the 18th century, while the horse-engine house was built in the 19th century. The building is constructed from painted cob with a corrugated iron roof featuring gable ends. The horse-engine house is made of stone rubble and has a roof that is partly slate and partly corrugated.

The stables include integral loft space and are rectangular in plan, with the barn and horse-engine house projecting to the rear. The stables have windows on either side of a plank door, with a loft door situated above. The barn, located to the right, features pilaster buttresses at the front, flanking a large threshing door, and additional buttresses at each end, with a wide two-leaf threshing door towards the right end. There is a lean-to structure at the right end of the barn, also with a corrugated iron roof.

At the rear, the polygonal horse-engine house has infilled openings on each side and retains part of the horizontal winding beam. Inside the barn, single blades with pegged collars are part of two trusses, and there is a complete truss over the stable with a halved and pegged collar, which originally had trenched purlins.
