Description

The Law Memorial Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1885, consisting of 12 flats. They are constructed from squared rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a tiled roof with three large axial stacks situated between each twin gable. The stacks have crenellated caps, recessed panelled sides, and are corbelled in a Lombard style at the top. The building is two storeys high and has a series of three twin gabled projections, each with coped gables, cavetto moulded kneelers, fleur-de-lis finials, and shaped rafter ends.

The entrances are double arched, located in the recesses between the gables. Each gable has a three-light stone mullion window with drip moulds above transomed mullion windows that contain three segmental arched lights, also with crenellated drip moulds. A moulded stone string course runs along each pair of gables, with the central one rising as a segmental arched hoodmould over a plaque that commemorates the erection of the almshouses "in loving memory of Thomas Shephard Law and of William Henry Law, His Son. By the sorrowing wife and mother."

Each gable features a small cinquefoil pierced stone inset near its apex. Two recessed bays have porches with twin pointed arches made of chromatic stonework, supported by a central slender marble column and corbelled out to each side. The inner doorways are segmental arched with chamfered and stopped architraves. Above each pair of arches, there is a low stone balustrade with a crenellated parapet. The left end has a tiled lean-to roof over the entrance porch, while the right end contains a single-storey Board Room with a pointed arched doorway and a two-light window featuring a central colonette, corbelled hoodmould, and decorative lattice work in the leaded cames.
