Description

First Bridge is a road bridge over the river, constructed in 1839, likely designed by James Green, the County Surveyor. It features a single span supported by three cast-iron girders shaped as segmental arches with open spandrels. The bridge has cast-iron deck plates and cast-iron parapet railings. The abutments are made of sandstone ashlar and include raised piers and strings. First Bridge spans the Spratford Stream, which is a tributary of the River Culm, and it was built following the destruction of the previous bridge in floods.
