Description
The barn and linhays, located to the west of West Leigh Farmhouse, date from the late 17th to early 18th century. They are built with exposed cob on stone rubble footings and have a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatch. This L-shaped range of farm buildings appears to be contemporary with the farmhouse.
The south-facing range features two sets of linhays and a full-height carriageway alongside the house. At the western end, the barn faces east at a right angle to the linhays. The linhays consist of three bays on the left and four bays on the right, separated by a cob wall that steps down. There is another cob wall near the right end between the linhay and the carriageway. Both linhays are of Alcock's Type T1, open-fronted with full-height posts.
The roof extends over the carriageway to connect with the farmhouse on the right and meets the taller barn on the left. The barn has large opposing central doors leading to the threshing floor, flanked by small loading hatches. The front door is accompanied by short projecting midstrey walls, and the roof extends over these as a hood. The doors on both sides are unusual and likely original, constructed as stable-type doors with planks and ledges pinned together with small projecting oak pegs instead of nails. The roofs are gable-ended, supported by A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. These farm buildings create an attractive group with the adjoining West Leigh Farmhouse.
