Description

The Roman Catholic Church and attached presbytery, known as Sion House, was built between 1836 and 1839, designed by the architect GA Boyce on land donated by the Chichesters of Calverleigh Court. The church is in the Gothic Revival style, while the presbytery showcases Tudor Gothic style.

The church features a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, characterized by offset buttresses and hoodmoulds over the windows and west door. The chancel includes cinquefoil-headed lights and a four-light east window with an elaborate rose above similar lights. The nave has two-light windows with quatrefoils above the cinquefoil-headed lights, and a small quatrefoil light is located in the west gable, above a porch that has offset corner buttresses and a pointed moulded arch set on engaged shafts. Inside, the church has shallow four-centred arch braces supporting the ceiling and coloured glass borders in the windows.

The presbytery is two storeys high and symmetrically designed, featuring a double-gabled west front with flat-headed Gothic-style windows. The upper tier is distinguished by mouchettes set above ogee-arched cinquefoil-headed lights. Other elevations display mullioned windows, with the left-hand gable adjoining the church featuring a crest above mullioned windows that have 16th-century-style pointed-arched lights. The interior of the presbytery has not been inspected. This building is a distinctive group designed by a notable local architect.
