Description
The Culme chest tomb, dated 1663, is located approximately 15 metres south of the aisle of the Church of St Mary in Burlescombe. This large chest tomb is constructed with a grey basalt lid and purple volcanic ashlar for the rest of the structure. The flat soffit moulded lid features sides that are divided into three panels by piers of projecting fillets, with each panel displaying a projecting oval medallion. The tomb includes a moulded frieze and rests on a moulded plinth. The top of the lid is adorned with a carved coat of arms and an inscription in neat Roman serif capitals, commemorating the death of Benjamin Culme in 1663.
