Description
Crooked Chimney Cottage is a pair of cottages with an adjoining dairy, now functioning as a house. It likely has a 17th-century core and was remodeled in the 18th century, with the two cottages united in the 20th century. The building features plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob stacks topped by 19th-century brick and a 20th-century brick stack, all beneath a wheat reed thatched roof. The two-storey structure faces south and includes a hipped roof to the left over the dairy and hayloft. There is a cob party wall and a single-room cottage at the east end, which has a large stack projecting from the gable end.
The front has six windows, which are 19th and 20th-century wooden casements of various sizes and irregular placement, most featuring glazing bars and small panes. The eaves rise slightly over three first-floor windows. A door is located towards the left, accompanied by a 20th-century timber porch under a hipped weatherboarded roof. A window second from the right blocks the former cottage door. Inside, the main rooms have plain chamfered beams and cob fireplaces with chamfered oak lintels and brick side ovens. The partition from the entrance lobby includes a 17th-century scroll-stopped door jamb, although it cannot be confirmed to be in its original position. There is also a 20th-century plastered brick stack at the dairy end.
