Description
Dowhills Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with some 19th-century alterations, and it may be a remodelling of an earlier house. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with a right end stack and two rear lateral stacks. The building has a single depth main range that is three rooms wide, with an entrance leading into a passage that contains the stair to the right of centre. A fourth room at the left end is used as a store. The plan suggests a house built before 1700, but the visible details are from the 18th or 19th century. There are rear lean-tos that are likely 18th or 19th-century additions.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with eight windows, featuring regular fenestration and a notably pronounced curve on the front elevation to the left of centre. There is a 19th-century gabled rustic porch made of split logs to the right of centre, with additional doorways leading into the right-hand room and the store room at the left end. A louvred opening is located on the first floor to the left, adjacent to a sash window, while the other windows are probably 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars.
Inside, there is a large open fireplace at the right end, which includes a bread oven; the lintel has been replaced, and there is evidence of rebuilding of the jambs. The right-hand room features a deeply-chamfered cross beam with run-out stops. The other fireplaces are plain, but earlier jambs and lintels may still be present. The two rooms to the left of the entrance have plain cross beams, with one positioned diagonally in line with the curved front wall. A brick partition wall to the left of the stair is likely a 19th-century addition. Some 18th-century joinery can be found on the first floor. At the time of the survey in 1986, alterations, including reslating, were in progress. The farmhouse is situated on a prominent corner site.
