Description

ST 02 SW HUNTSHAM HUNTSHAM

7/92 Lychgate to churchyard -

GV II

Lychgate. 1854-8 for A.H.D. Troyte of Huntsham Court, patron of the living. Timber ends with a gableted slate roof with sprocketted eaves; pair of timber gates. Described as "similar" to the medieval lych gate at Beckenham in Kent (TEDAS) which was probably the model for the design. Openwork timber ends, each with a stout post with 2 upward curving braces, springing from the post, all chamfered and stopped. These braces are intersected by a pair of downward curving braces which extend from the top of each post to a sole plate. Deep slate roof with sweeping sprocketted eaves over ornamental pitched stone paving. Sturdy timber gates with moulded finials to the standards and diagonal bracing; pivoting S-shaped iron clasp. A.H.D. Troyte enlarged the churchyard in 1854, the lychgate is a particularly bold and impressive design.
