Description

Reed headstone, dated 1804, located approximately 3 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Matthew in Coldridge. This headstone commemorates John Reed and is made of slate. It features an upright square-headed slab that stands about 1 metre high. The inscription begins with the word "sacred" in Gothic lettering, enhanced with scrollwork, and continues in upper and lower case Roman serif letters, recording John Reed's death in 1804 along with an elegy. At the top, there is a delicate pattern of incised scrollwork surrounding a cherub's head, executed in the same calligraphic style.
