Description

Church Cottage is a 17th-century cottage that has been modernised with a service extension around 1975. It features plastered cob on rubble footings and has a cob stack topped with 20th-century brick, all under a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room plan facing south, with the right (eastern) room being larger than the left. An axial stack serves only the larger room, and there is a front lobby entrance between the two rooms. The circa 1975 single-storey service extension at the rear of the left room has a flat roof. The main block is two storeys high and has an irregular front with three ground floor and two first floor windows, which include a mix of late 19th-century and 20th-century casements, the latest of which lacks glazing bars. The central 20th-century stable-type door has a sidelight and a monopitch thatched hood. A third first floor window towards the left end is thought to be blocked, which would have balanced the front if it were open. The roof is hipped at both ends. Inside, the cottage has plain carpentry details, with no main beams visible. The fireplace is made of stone rubble and cob, featuring an oak lintel that is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. The oven was either inserted or relined in the late 19th century. Although the roof is inaccessible, the base of a likely original A-frame truss can be seen over the larger room. A Church Cottage, though not definitively identified as this one, is recorded in 1679.
