Description
The West Gateway and adjoining churchyard walls to the Church of St John the Baptist, dated 1862, are made of rock-faced grey limestone ashlar with Hamstone detailing. The gateway features a tall two-centred arch with a moulded surround, recessed below a chamfered segmental pointed relieving arch. The plain sides have weathered offsets for narrow flanking buttresses. At the top, the tall banded coping is interrupted in the center by a Hamstone plaque, although the inscription has worn away. The rear of the plaque is identical and retains the date 1862. The arch contains original wrought iron gates. On either side, the churchyard is bordered by a tall stone wall made of local red sandstone conglomerate rubble.
