Description
Wressing Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, significantly remodelled and partially rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The right-hand end wall and much of the rear wall are brick; the remainder is of cob, resting on stone footings and covered with roughcast. It has a gabled slate roof. The original layout was a three-room cross-passage plan, with the service end located to the left of the central passage, and a rear wing extending from it. Internal end stacks and an external lateral rear stack provide heating, with brick chimney shafts throughout. The farmhouse is two stories high. The front elevation has a four-window range; the first floor features a three-light casement window in a small early embrasure at the service end, with larger two- and three-light casement windows elsewhere. The ground floor has a three-light casement window at the service end and in the hall, and a French window to the inner room. A porch with a moulded entablature supported by two slender Tuscan timber columns, complete with pilasters, stands at the front. The rear elevation includes a single two-light casement window set under a depressed window arch. The roof appears to have been completely replaced in the 19th century with sawn A-profile principals. Two 17th-century ceiling beams, presumed to have been removed from the main house, were reused in a small outbuilding constructed of rubble masonry with a gabled slate roof, dated 1875. These beams are axially placed, chamfered, and one has good scroll stops with a notch. The outbuilding, which projects forward from the house, is connected to it by a low cob wall with slate coping. The house retains its original layout and has an attractive front elevation.
