Description

Glumsters is a pair of dwellings that date from the 17th century or earlier, with 19th century and later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of roughcast cob on stone footings and features a half-hipped thatched roof. The original layout is uncertain but likely consisted of a three-room, through-passage plan, with the service end located to the right of the passage. This area is heated by a rear external lateral stack that has set offs and a very tall brick chimney. There is an additional room beyond, likely added in the 19th century. The hall is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage, while the inner room has been rebuilt and subdivided, now functioning as a separate dwelling with its own axial stack, both of which have brick shafts.

The building has two storeys and the front exterior features a slightly recessed inner room. It has a six-window range, with all windows fitted with late 20th century casements. The first-floor windows have lintels at eaves level, except for the extreme left-hand window, which has an eyebrow eave. The left-hand side and rear also have late 20th century fenestration, and there is a slated lean-to at the right-hand end.

The interior has not been fully inspected, but one jointed cruck truss was observed at the rear of the passage, featuring a side pegged joint with a long straight upper member, possibly from the 17th century. The fireplace in the service end is blocked, and the ceiling beam in this room is axial, chamfered with run-out stops. The hall fireplace has a large chamfered lintel, and the inner room contains an unstopped chamfered axial beam.
