Description
The Handcock headstone, dated 1808, is located approximately 15 metres south-west of the tower of the Church of St Matthew in Coldridge. This headstone commemorates John Handcock and members of his family. Made of slate, it features an upright, nowy-headed slab that stands about 1.2 metres high. The inscription begins with the word 'Sacred' in ornate Gothic letters, followed by upper and lower case Roman serif letters. It records the deaths of John Handcock (died 1808), his wife Grace (died 1783), and their grandchildren (died 1798). The head of the stone is adorned with charmingly crude bas-relief carving, which includes a central circle inscribed with a Biblical quote, flanked by relatively crude angel supporters.
