Description
The Lippincott chest tomb, dated 1753, is located approximately 4 metres west of Prescott Baptist Church. This chest tomb commemorates Mary Lippincott and is constructed from Beerstone ashlar. It has a rectangular shape and stands on a gadrooned base. The sides feature paneling adorned with a Vitruvian scroll frieze, while the lid is soffit-moulded and has a low-pitched ridge on top. Some panels are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. The left panel on the south side records the death of Mary Lippincott in 1753, and the right panel commemorates Elizabeth Lippincott, who died in 1760, along with other family members who passed away around that time. This monument is notable for being both unusually early and ornate for a Devon non-conformist tomb.
