Description

The garden house and boundary walls of the courtyard to the northeast of Ravenswood School, formerly known as Stoodleigh Court, were built in 1883 by architects Sir Ernest George and H.E. Peto. The structure is made of stone rubble with Ham Hill dressings, although the original covering of the ogival roof of the garden house has been replaced or re-covered with asphalted material.

The garden house is designed as a corner pavilion for the courtyard in front of the entrance (north) elevation of Stoodleigh Court and may have been loosely inspired by the early 17th century forecourt pavilions at Montacute House in Somerset. It is a two-storey building, square in plan, topped with an ogival roof that features a weathercock. The ground floor has open arches on two sides that create a sheltered area. Inside the courtyard, a flight of Ham Hill stone steps leads to a segmental arched stone doorway on the first floor, which has round-headed windows with keystones and external wooden shutters.

Adjoining the building is a steeply-coped stone wall that forms the northeast side of the courtyard. There is also a second wall that creates the northeast boundary of the courtyard, which includes coped gate piers. These features are important to the setting of Stoodleigh Court.
