Description
Barns Cottage is an early 19th-century cottage, likely remodelled from an earlier building. It is constructed of stone rubble with a thatched roof, hipped at each end, and features a projecting stack on the right end with a brick shaft, probably dating to the 20th century. A later, smaller stack is located at the rear. Originally a shop and cottage, the plan comprises a main block of two rooms, a single-storey lean-to at the left end, and a 20th-century rear addition. The right-hand room was formerly a shop, with a blocked shop door on the front, and the partition between this space and the smaller, heated room on the left has since been removed. The lean-to has been converted into a kitchen. A low cellar with a pitched stone floor suggests that the origins of the building predate the 19th century and that the surrounding road level has been raised. The front elevation is asymmetrical with three windows and three gables featuring decorated bargeboards with pendants at the apex. A 19th-century plank front door, covered by a thatched gabled porch, is located to the left of centre, alongside two-light casement windows with glazing bars. Inside, there is a fireplace with a bread oven, and a staircase is situated on the rear wall of the left-hand room. The building holds group value with The Old Forge.
