Description
Spekes Cross is a wayside cross located approximately 175 metres north-north-east of Heywood House. It is probably from the 15th century and stands on a 20th-century base. The cross is made of granite and features a socket stone set on a concrete plinth. The plain Latin cross, which is about 2.4 metres high, is carved from a single piece of granite. Its edges are slightly chamfered, and the stem is irregular. One arm of the cross has been replaced. The cross is set into a plain square-section socket stone on a two-step concrete plinth, and the back of the cross displays much rougher toolwork. It is now situated alongside a woodland path that was once the drive to the now-ruined Eggesford House. The cross was likely erected in the 19th century.
