Description
Hele House is an early to mid-19th century house located in West Sandford. It is a two-room double-depth house facing south-east, with a central staircase plan and stacks projecting from the end walls. A rear service wing extends from the north-east end. The house is built of plastered rubble, with rubble stacks and 19th-century brick chimney shafts, and has a slate roof. The symmetrical front has three windows, with rusticated stucco quoins at each end. The central door is a four-panel design with a fanlight containing glazing bars, panelled reveals, and a Doric porch with fluted columns and a moulded entablature. Flanking the door are 16-pane sashes, and above them are 12-pane sashes, with a central 9-pane sash. The roof is half-hipped at each end. The rear block incorporates a small 19th-century casement window with leaded glass on its inner face, though the rear was rebuilt in the 20th century.
The interior is well-preserved and features a geometric open string staircase with facetted and turned balusters, a mahogany scrolled handrail that is wreathed with a curtail step, and a segmental stair arch with stucco eagle-supporters.
