Description
This description covers a pair of adjacent chest tombs located approximately 14 meters south of the aisle of the Church of St Mary. The tombs date from the late 18th century, with one dedicated to John Brown, who died in 1793, and the other to Margaret Brown, who died in 1797. Both tombs are constructed from roughly-coursed blocks of volcanic stone rubble and feature grey basalt lids. They have plain flat lids and plain walls. The southern chest tomb, which is the older of the two, has an inscription in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering that commemorates John Brown's death. Additionally, there is a Hamstone plaque at the west end of this tomb honoring John Brown's sons. The northern tomb's lid is inscribed in italic lettering, recording the death of Margaret Brown.
