Description
The Shippard chest tomb, dated 1733, is located approximately 5 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Burlescombe. This chest tomb is constructed from Hamstone ashlar with slate side panels. It features a soffit-moulded lid with a low-pitched ridge on top. The sides of the tomb have rectangular sunken panels with bead-moulded surrounds, including two slate panels on each long side and single Hamstone panels at each end. The tomb rests on a moulded plinth. On the south side, the left panel is inscribed; the first word is in Gothic lettering, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, commemorating the death of William Shippard in 1733.
