Description
The Taw Bridge Toll House is a toll house built around 1835. It is constructed of brick with some details in Portland stone, featuring a brick stack and chimney shaft, and has a slate roof. The building is a small two-room structure facing northeast, with an entrance lobby located at the right (northwest) end. The central room includes a rear lateral stack. The low gable-ended range has a slightly projecting central bay with a gabled front over a canted bay window, which contains a forward 12-pane sash window flanked by two 8-pane sashes. To the right, there is a plank stable-type door, and to the left, a blind window, both of which have round-headed arches with slightly projecting keystones. A 12-pane sash window is located on the left end. This section of the Exeter-Barnstaple Turnpike road was opened in 1835, and the toll house remains complete.
