Description

The Culme chest tomb, dated 1658, is located approximately 14 metres south of the aisle of the Church of St Mary in Burlescombe. This large chest tomb is constructed with a basalt lid and Hamstone ashlar, featuring marble panels. It has a flat lid with moulded edges and panelled sides, supported by panelled clasping pilasters beneath a frieze with a dentil cornice. The tomb rests on a moulded plinth. The lid displays a coat of arms and an inscription in neat Roman serif capitals commemorating the death of Richard Culme in 1658.
