Description
Cheriton Cross is a wayside cross that now serves as a war memorial. It dates back to the medieval period and was restored and repositioned in the 20th century. The cross is made of granite and stands approximately 1.22 meters high. It is a Type B cross, octagonal in shape with two short arms, though the west side has been restored. The cross is set in a large granite socket stone that is square in section, featuring heavily weathered and indistinct corner shoulders, which give the top surface an octagonal appearance.
In 1969, during road widening operations, the cross was moved about 20 meters north from its original site. The upper part of the cross remains, but it is missing most of its shaft. According to a tablet on the back, it was restored to the glory of God and in memory of the men of Cheriton Bishop who lost their lives in World War I and II. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
