Description
Lower Moorhayes is a former farmhouse dating from the 16th century, possibly the early 16th century. The building is constructed of cob with a stone plinth and is plastered, topped by a thatched roof with hipped and gabled ends. Originally, it was a three-room, cross-passage house with a lower wing at the rear. The axial stack heats the hall and backs onto the passage, while there is a right-hand end stack and an end stack for the wing, all with brick shafts. The left-hand stack has a breezeblock structure for a boiler.
The front of the building features a range of five windows, with two- and three-light windows on the first floor set at eaves level. The ground floor has four two- and three-light windows, all of which are 19th and 20th-century barred casements. There are two doors; one is located on the right-hand side under a slated porch supported by brackets, while the door to the former cross-passage is blocked. The wing has a two-light window on each floor, and a rear lean-to conceals the former stair turret.
Inside, much of the original structure has been covered up, making interpretation challenging. Seven roof trusses are visible in the upper rooms, and the trusses in the lower end may be crucks, though they are boxed. The roof space has not been inspected.
