Description

Oakford Bridge is a road bridge spanning the River Exe. It likely dates from the 19th century or earlier, although the bridge deck has been mostly replaced in the 20th century. The bridge is constructed from stone rubble and timber, with a timber deck supported by four stone rubble piers, each featuring cutwaters. The cutwaters along the upstream side vary in size. The bridge is thought to sit atop earlier masonry foundations. The bridge is surrounded by timber fence parapets. A depiction of the bridge, showing the four piers with an irregular timber structure, is found in "Picturesque Sketches of Devon."
