Description
The Meacham chest tomb, dated 1721, is located approximately 15 metres west of Prescott Baptist Chapel. This chest tomb is constructed from hamstone ashlar and has a rectangular shape. It features a soffit-moulded lid with a low-pitched ridge on top, while the base is currently buried. Each side of the tomb has a single rectangular panel, and each end has a round-headed panel. The north side is inscribed with slightly cursive Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, commemorating the death of Daniel Meacham in 1721. The west end includes a secondary inscription in more formal lettering, noting the death of Daniel Slanderwick in 1784. This monument is both unusually early and ornate for a Devon non-conformist burial site.
