Description

Grove Hill House is a villa built in the late 1850s. It features grey limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins, while the north-west end is rendered and the service block is partly brick. The slate roof retains some crested ridge tiles, and there are stone stacks with ashlar shafts. The design is in the Tudor style, with an overall U-shaped plan. The house is oriented on a north-west/south-east axis, with the entrance located on the south-west side. The main section is a double depth block to the south, with a service courtyard situated between two wings to the north.

The exterior consists of two storeys and has an asymmetrical four-window front, with the main entrance positioned to the right of the centre. The house features a gabled front at the right end and a short projecting gabled block to the left of the porch. Both gables have deep verges and pierced curly bargeboards. The projecting gabled porch also has similar bargeboards, along with a pendant and finial. The outer doorway is chamfered and has a two-centred shape with a hoodmould, leading to a likely original plank front door adorned with elaborate strap hinges. The original windows are fitted with chamfered architraves and slender hoodmoulds, and they are glazed with two-light high-transomed casements. The right-hand gable displays a stone shield. There are three stone ridge stacks topped with multiple ashlar shafts featuring moulded cornices.

The interior and rear elevation have not been inspected. The house is not mentioned in White's 1850 Devon, but in the 1879 edition, it is noted as being owned by Robert Manning Davy, J.P., who was one of the principal proprietors of Topsham and also owned Oxenway Lodge in Membury, near Axminster.
