Description

Bridge Mill is a corn and feedstuffs mill building with an attached dwelling, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later additions from the late 19th century and early 20th century (1911). The mill and dwelling are constructed from plastered brick, featuring a gabled-end and hipped slate roof, while the dwelling has red crested ridge tiles. The 1911 addition is made of red brick with yellow brick detailing and has a gabled-end slate roof. The house has two storeys, while the other buildings have three.

The old mill front includes four two-light windows at various heights, with original casements and some leaded panes. There are two doors on the ground floor and another on the first floor. The right-hand end has delivery access just above ground level and one small gable wall window. The attached house features a prominent front internal stack and an end stack, both with brick shafts. The front of the house has two planes: one that is well forward and parallel to the mill, and another that is canted and links the two. There are two mid-19th century casement windows on the first floor, and one late 20th century ground floor window to the left of the door, which has a canopy supported by shaped brackets. A later 19th century extension is located at the rear of the house.

The 1911 building has a three-window range with decorative yellow brick bands, window surrounds, and quoins. When it was listed in 1961, this mill was believed to be the last functioning tidal mill in Devon; the wheel was enclosed on the roadside. Although it no longer operates as a mill, some of the machinery is said to still exist.
