Description
Great Duryard, also known as St Thomas Hall of Residence, is a building constructed by Sir Thomas Jefford in the very late 17th century. It underwent alterations and additions in 1771, which are marked on the rain-water heads, and was further modified and stuccoed in the mid-19th century. The building is two storeys high with a five-window front. The original late 17th-century swag is located in the center of the parapet and is flanked by large splayed bays. The windows are 19th-century sash windows. There is a Roman Doric porch with a balustrade, and the roof is slate with attic dormers. The garden wall features a doorway with a semi-circular hood on brackets, and the underside displays a plaster relief of weapons, likely indicating the original front door. The interior includes features from all periods, including a music room from 1771.
