Description
The City of Exeter War Memorial Cross, made of Devon granite, is located at the center of the First World War burial plot on the west side of Higher Cemetery. It is aligned with the Southern Mortuary Chapel, which is also listed as Grade II, and is situated near the cemetery lodge and the Northern Mortuary Chapel, both of which are Grade II-listed.
The memorial features a slender cross with a small reversed sword on the face of the cross-head, rising from an octagonal plinth that sits on a low stone base. Bronze plaques are affixed to the faces of the plinth. The main plaque, which displays the arms of the City of Exeter in relief, bears the dedicatory inscription that reads: "CITY OF EXETER/ IN MEMORY OF/ MEN WHO DIED IN/ THIS CITY FROM THE/ EFFECTS OF THEIR/ SERVICE OVERSEAS/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The names of those commemorated are listed alphabetically on the other plaques.
