Description
The Southern Mortuary Chapel at Higher Cemetery is one of a pair of Gothic mortuary chapels, likely built in 1866. The cemetery was officially consecrated and opened in the same year as Bartholomew's Yard. Designed by Edward Ashworth, this chapel was intended for the Church of England, while the other chapel served Non-Conformists. It is constructed of Heavitree coursed stone with Bath stone dressings and features a slate roof with bands of different colored slate, along with cast iron rainwater goods and ridge tiles with finials.
The chapel has a small rectangular plan with the entrance located at the west end. The exterior includes low battered footings, angle buttresses, and a bellcote. There are three windows on both the north and south sides, designed in the Decorated style with two trefoil-headed lights and variations in head tracery. The west end features a pointed arch plank door adorned with Gothic iron strap work, above which are two Decorated style windows and a single blind Decorated style window. The east end has a window with three trefoil-headed lights and head tracery, with stained glass in the east window while the others contain clear glass. Hood mouldings are decorated with high-quality carved pre-Raphaelite heads at the terminals. An iron bootscraper is located to the left of the door.
This chapel is part of a significant group that includes the Northern Mortuary Chapel and Lodge.
