Description

This is a row of 18th-century buildings on Monmouth Hill, Topsham, although they have been considerably altered and modernised. Numbers 12 to 27 form the upper floors of numbers 1 to 9 on The Strand, situated 15 to 20 feet above the level of the Strand. The buildings occupy most of the west side of Monmouth Hill. The large chimneys, serving the full height of the adjacent buildings on The Strand, are proportionally significant and contribute to the overall picturesque and unusual appearance. The fronts are of brick and roughcast, topped with fairly steep roofs, some covered with old tarred slates. Dormer windows are also present. The buildings are included on the list for their group value, forming an important group with the other listed buildings along Monmouth Hill.
