Description

Riverside Cottage is a cottage dating from around the 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob and features a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the left (northwest) end and gabled at the right (northeast) end. The cottage has a gable end stack with a slate weathered set-off and a red brick shaft.

The plan consists of a small one-room layout, heated by a stack located in the right-hand gable end, with access through a doorway in the splayed front left corner. A winder staircase in the back left corner leads to the chamber above. In the 20th century, a small porch was added to the splayed corner, and a small outshut was constructed at the right-hand end.

The cottage is one storey with an attic. The southwest front features a 19th-century cast-iron two-light casement window with small panes at the centre of the ground floor. The splayed corner to the left has a small 20th-century porch clad in steel sheets, with a two-light casement window above. The right-hand gable end has a projecting stack to the right and a cast-iron casement window on each floor, with a single light on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, both featuring small panes. There is a small 20th-century painted brick outshut on the right, while the left-hand end has a wooden casement window on the ground floor. The rear elevation is blind.

Inside, there is a chamfered cross beam, and the winder stairs lead to a chamber that contains a 19th-century cast-iron fire grate and ledged doors. The roof structure, likely original, has its principal rafters and purlins exposed in the chamber.
