Description
Palace Gate features a row of three 3-storey, 3-window red brick terrace houses, built around 1805. The ground floor has found-headed windows with recessed arcading, and there are patent stone imposts, bands, cornices, and doorways, which are typical of the standard Colleton Crescent style. The doors have vermiculated Gibbs surrounds, and the sash windows include glazing bars. There are good lead downpipes and a modillion eaves cornice, although the roof is not visible. Number 9 has a modern top storey. Numbers 5 and 7 are used as offices by Kennaway and Co and others, with the doorway to No 7 blocked. Inside, there is 18th-century panelling and staircase, along with a 19th-century office interior featuring panelling and original furniture. Adjacent to No 9, there is a stone post inscribed with "Palace Gate removed 1812." All the buildings in Palace Gate are part of a group value context.
