Description

The gatehouse to the Bishop's Palace dates primarily to the 14th century, with 18th-century alterations including the addition of sash windows and a staircase. In 1875, William Butterfield added stone windows and a half-timbered top storey. The building has been subsequently altered and now has a modern slate roof over two storeys. The main walls, arch, and slit windows largely represent the original medieval fabric. The gatehouse is part of a group of listed buildings along Palace Gate.
