Description
Nos 15 and 15A in Cathedral Close are a pair of buildings that were formerly the Chancellor's house, mostly constructed by Chancellor Furseman around 1740, although there are older walls and traces of medieval work present. No 15 has two storeys and features seven windows, a red brick front, a brick string course, and quoins. It has a central pediment with an oeuil-de-boeuf, a coved cornice, and dormers. The doorway is topped with a pediment on console brackets. A glazed verandah has been added, and the glazing bars have been altered. The hipped slate roof has rebuilt brick chimneys. Inside, there is a mid-18th century staircase and panelling. No 15A features a pedimented hood on brackets above its doorway. The garden wall includes a blocked four-centred arch, indicating a significant rise in ground level in this area. All the listed buildings in Cathedral Close are part of a group.
