Description
The Sidmouth Memorial Fountain is a water fountain dated 1915, built in memory of Viscount Sidmouth. It is constructed from local stone and flint rubble. The fountain is slightly set back from the roadside and faces north-west. It is housed in a round-headed niche with a gabled top. The lead water spout is designed to resemble a dolphin, and the water flows into an 18th-century lead cistern, which features ornamental detailing and bears the initials BH along with the date 1774.
Above the water spout, there is a stone plaque that reads: "This fountain is erected in lasting memory of my husband Gerald, 4th Viscount Sidmouth. The welfare of his tenants was his constant thought, and his last care was to give them this supply of pure water. He died on March 25th 1915."
On either side of the niche, tall quadrant walls with rusticated crenellation at the tops curve forward to square terminal posts capped with pyramids. Each wall includes a round-back niche with a low segmental arch head. The fountain has been kept in working order and is now activated by a 20th-century foot button. It is also part of an attractive group of listed buildings that make up the scattered hamlet of Rawridge.
