Description

Furzy Cottage is a late 18th-century to early 19th-century cottage, and potentially incorporates an older core. It is built of plastered local stone and flint rubble, with some cob possibly included; the east end reveals the stone and flint rubble. The stacks are constructed of stone rubble topped with 19th-century and 20th-century brick, and the roof is thatched. The cottage follows a three-room plan, facing south-south-west, and is built down a steep hillslope. The room at the east end, uphill to the right, has a gable-end stack and was probably a parlour. The room at the west end was likely a kitchen and features a rear lateral stack. The central room is now a kitchen but was formerly unheated and used as a service room, probably a dairy or buttery. An entrance hall and staircase are located between the central and west rooms. The cottage has two storeys. The exterior has an irregular three-window front with 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars; the first-floor windows have thatch eyebrows above them. The front doorway, positioned left of centre, contains a late 19th-century or 20th-century plank door and a small 20th-century hood. The roof is hipped to the left and gable-ended to the right, extending down over outshots to the rear. The interior was not inspected at the time of survey.
