Description
Lilac Cottage is a Grade II listed cottage, likely dating from the 18th century, which was modernised around 1960. It is constructed from plastered local stone and flint rubble, possibly with some cob, and features a stone rubble stack topped with 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The cottage has a three-room plan facing south-south-west. The central room is heated by an axial stack that backs onto the right (east) end room, while both end rooms are unheated. The entrance and staircase are located between the central and left (west) end rooms. Most structural timbers are covered with plaster, making it difficult to determine the original layout or any development details.
The exterior has an irregular two-window front with 20th-century casements that include glazing bars, with the first-floor windows extending slightly into the eaves. The front doorway is positioned towards the left end and features a 20th-century door behind a contemporary porch. The main roof is half-hipped at both ends. On the rear wall, there is a first-floor window at the east end, which is from the 19th century or earlier, featuring a two-light casement with rectangular panes of leaded glass.
The interior was not available for inspection during the survey, but the owner reports that all beams have been boxed in and the fireplace is blocked. The visible features reflect the modernisation from around 1960. Lilac Cottage is part of a group of listed buildings that form the scattered hamlet of Rawridge.
