Description

The courtyard of farm buildings adjoining the north of Upton Farmhouse dates from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of red cob on stone rubble footings, with some sections rebuilt in 20th-century brick, and feature a thatch roof. The courtyard is enclosed on three sides, with a tall plastered cob wall separating the south side from the farmhouse forecourt, extending eastward from the north end of the house. The east side contains a milking parlour that has been converted from a linhay, while the north side features a threshing barn with a full-height carriageway between the barn and the milking parlour.

The barn has central opposing full-height doorways on the threshing floor, and the plank double doors leading to the farm courtyard are 19th-century with flaps. The front of the barn is mostly obscured by 20th-century calf houses. The front of the milking parlour is also from the 20th century and is positioned about one meter in front of the original timber-framed linhay front, which has been largely destroyed. Inside, the roofs of both the barn and the milking parlour consist of A-frame trusses; those over the carriageway and milking parlour feature pegged lap-jointed collars, while the barn has spiked lap-jointed collars. These traditional farm buildings create an attractive group with the adjacent Upton Farmhouse and are notable for still having their thatch roofs.
