Description

Bovey House, including the outbuilding adjoining to the north, is a manor house with medieval origins that has been used as a hotel. It was largely rebuilt and extended in the early and late 16th century, with further alterations made in the 1660s. This house was once the seat of the Walrond family. It is a large stone structure with a slate roof featuring stone coping on the gable ends and has an asymmetrical plan. The east front has four bays; the left two storeys are said to have been reduced in height in 1868, while the right two bays rise three storeys and include stringcourses and a parapet, possibly of earlier origin. A moulded two-centred arch doorway is located on the left-hand return. The windows feature ovolo moulded mullions with hood moulds, and the ground floor has two six-light windows with transoms. A moulded lead rainwater head dated 1592 is also present. The west wing at the rear has two storeys and an attic with three gables and a gabled projection in the angle.

Inside, the hall, which is now the drawing room and was formerly two rooms, boasts two late 17th century moulded plaster ceilings and moulded panelling with cornices and chimneypieces. The dining room features linenfold panelling with a frieze adorned with medallion busts and an inlaid overmantel. A first-floor room showcases a remarkable 17th century moulded plaster coffered ceiling, which displays a large oak tree in the central oval, surrounded by smaller trees and small equestrian figures. This room also has moulded panelling and a pilastered overmantel above a four-centred arch chimney piece. The adjoining outbuilding to the north contains a large timber tread wheel used for raising water from a well.
