Description
Borcombe Farmhouse, built around 1850, is a farmhouse constructed from local stone and flint rubble, featuring Beerstone ashlar dressings. It has stone rubble stacks with original chimney shafts that have Beerstone ashlar quoins and projecting coping, topped with a slate roof. The farmhouse is oriented southeast and is situated on a gentle hillside, with a double depth plan that includes front and back rooms on either side of a central entrance hall and staircases. The main living areas are located at the front, while the service rooms are at the rear. It has gable-end stacks, with the north-east stack being larger and aligned with the main house, which is two storeys high and designed in a restrained Tudor Gothic style.
The exterior features a nearly symmetrical three-window front with 19th-century casement windows that have glazing bars, all set beneath Tudor-style hoodmoulds. The front doorway, slightly left of center, has a 19th-century four-panel door with an overlight and hoodmould. The roof is gable-ended. The dairy front mirrors the main house with three windows and a doorway, all featuring hoodmoulds, and also has a gable-ended roof with a small gabled bellcote on the ridge. The rear includes some round-headed windows with ashlar voussoirs.
The interior has not been inspected but is believed to contain original joinery and other details. The front garden is enclosed by a stone rubble wall, with square gate piers made of Beerstone ashlar, featuring moulded capitals and ball finials. Borcombe Farmhouse, along with its contemporary barn and cow house, forms a cohesive farm group in an attractive setting.
